John Thompson- I-Comm Introduction

The I-Comm Student Media here at BYU-Idaho is a student run organization that provides hands on, real life work in the career one wishes to pursue. In I-Comm, you are able to work in Scroll Digital, Scroll Newspaper, or Soapbox Agency. In this class lesson, I was able to find out what organization I could join and for work to enhance my experience in Public Relations. I also found out what classes I needed to take in order to be ready to work in Soapbox agency. This helped me in deciding my classes in my Grad Plan.

Lane Williams- Journalism

Journalism provides a way for people to be up to date on events occurring around the world. It allows us to be informed of our interests and portrays it in a tasteful manner. During this lesson, I began thinking about my own personal writing and how I can use my words to influence those around me. In class, we spoke on how people can be informed about my beliefs through social media and that it is all conveyed through words. I have been working very hard on blogging frequently and making sure that what it is that I am writing it tasteful and uplifting. I am not at 3,000 views and am networking myself using journalism through my blog.

Caryn Esplin- Visual Communication

One very important phrase that I got out of Sister Esplin’s lesson that week was, “Do something that no one else is doing.” As well as the training that comes with finding that one things that no one else is doing and showcasing it. Those five things are: graphic design, web design, imaging, social media marketing, and video. I was very interested in the lesson on visual communication because it taught me how important it is to be able to work online and understand how to design online. Studying visual communication will allow me to know how to edit videos, design website, and give professional presentations that will showcase my experience and skills. After this lesson, I did decide that I was going to module in visual communication.

Brian Howard- Video Production & Broadcast Journalism

Video production jobs allow one to work in a very fast paced environment. This also goes for Broadcast Journalism because this involves shows that are live and include deadlines. This environment seems very entertaining for me. This class taught me about what kind of envirment I would like to work in. As a Public Relations student, I desire to work in an environment where I will be moving fast paced and not just sitting in an office all day. Although I am not going into Video Production of Broadcast Journalism, I was able to evaluate on the kind of places I would like to work at.

Ward Hicks- Public Realtions/ PRSSA

Public Relations is a planned process to influence public opinion, through sound, character, and proper performance based on mutually satisfactory two-way communication. It was very important for me to obtain a clear definition of what public relations is since I am going into this field. It was very interesting to find that so many people, organizations, neighborhoods, customers, employees, and communities are involved in public relations work. This is because public relations revolves around educating people, fixing images, planning events, and writing and this is needed in all kind of organizations and even people. One phrase that really stuck out to me on this class day was, “Every organization has a story to tell. We find that story and tell it.”

Beth Hendricks- Advertising

I really enjoyed the week we were given the lesson on advertising. It is amazing at how much communication is involved in designing an ad, publishing the ad, and even in the ad itself. It is very true that first impressions matter and can determine your feelings or interests concerning that product. Advertising makes sure that what is trending will be used in the ads they are making. Advertising is used in absolutely everything and it was important that I have now been informed at how advertising will continuously revolve around my communication career. This being because of the 4 (now 5) P’s of marketing, which are: product, price, place, promotion, and now people.

Tyler Christensen- Academic Grad Plans

Academic Grad plans are very important in planning out your college career. Everyone desires to know how long they will be attending college. The Academic Grad Plan provides students a way for them to personally plan their future semesters and prepare for that day when they graduate from Brigham Young University-Idaho. It is also very helpful to have advisors that will monitor that grad plan and help us change anything that will affect us from graduating. I was able to have my grad plan submitted and approved before this lesson and was able to see why it was so important that I get it approved sooner rather than later.

Tyler Christensen- Internships

Internships provide students to get hands on experience in the work field they hope to one day go into. It was very informative to know that each department has its own internship coordinator and that ours is Melissa Bair. When one submits their internship, the coordinator will view it, review and decide whether to approve or disapprove that internship. It is important to be continuously seeking opportunities to receive an internship because it will provide that certain skill set one will need in their career. I learned from this lesson that I should be seeking out faculty that knows about expeditions and begin applying to start finding companies to intern for.

Shane Cole- Ethics and Plagiarism

As a public relations student, I understand that I will be writing a lot throughout my career and it is important for me to understand the dangers of plagiarism. Plagiarism is using another person’s words to use as my own. As a blogger, I was very intrigued in being educated about what things I can put on my blog and what things I cannot. It was interesting to find that ideas and facts cannot be copyrighted by others; however, the way they express these ideas and facts can be. I also learned that as a blogger, I have copyrighted material and have rights in order to keep my words and thoughts as my own.
